A couple of months ago an appeal was put out online by a group of people who were desperately needing some help with a public shelter in Radauti ,Romania. This shelter was well known for its horrific violence towards the animals in its care. Left to starve and eat each other, dissapearing to the local zoo to be fed to the lions. The list is horrific and goes on and on. So we decided to step in and see what could be done.
Here you had a newly formed dedicated NGO (Radauti Group for Animal Welfare) so very willing to do anything to help these dogs. They had the heart, fight and conviction and were physically able to help but lacked resources and fundraising experience. Also as is normally the way in Romania, had very little influence over the Mayor and his governors.
We on the other hand though lacked the ability to physically help over there on a regular basis,as a charity had the resources, experience at fundraising and negotiating skills
Seperated, both sides were limited to what could be achieved but together, now that was a whole different ball game.
We had to both decide what was it each other wanted to accomplish in this collaboration? It basically boiled down to the exact same thing.. We both wanted to help those dogs and turn that shelter around from a living hell for the lost to a sanctuary for the saved.
So after many days of discussion back and forth we both decided that two things needed to be focused upon to bring about the desperately needed change that was needed.
1st) Open negotiations with the Mayor and his councillors, construct and put forward a workable proposal where RGAW take over the management of the shelter, but whilst they are finding their feet still have the support of our charity just incase they need us.
2nd) To get more access to those dogs, making sure they are fed, vaccinated, recieve medical treatment, a better environment and to find them safe loving forever homes.
Entered into negotiations with the mayor and Raduati council and it looks very hopeful that the contract will be go. However as with all things in Romania, it is never a good thing to count your chickens! We still have a long way to go, and only a few weeks to do it in.
During these negotiations however much has already been acheieved, below is a list of just some of the things that RGAW are now allowed to do, with permission of the mayor, the council and current shelter management:. Full access to the shelter for as long as it is open which is 4 hours a day, 7 days a weekMonitoring and feeding of all dogsThe group vet is allowed full access to all dogs and to treat and vaccinate themSeperate kennels have been allocated to dogs we have found adopters forWe have been allowed to fix the heating and fix the treatment room for sick dogs to recooperate inPermission for regular spay and neuter clinics to be held at the shelter, using its full resourcesTagging and logging of all dogsAccess to ALL areas of the shelterMake emergency repairs to the shelterTo build indoor and outdoor kennels for all the dogsTo bring straw into the shelter for the dogs to lay on soft warm straw rather than hard and filthy floors and pallets
We will keep you updated on further achievements and hopefully news the contract has been gained as soon as we know. Until then, below we have added a photo gallery of RGAW hard at work, adding a little light into the very dark lives of Radauti shelter dogs.
